Former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has formally joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) after completing his registration with the party in his hometown in Rivers State.
Amaechi registered with the party at Ward 8 in Ubima, located in Ikwerre Local Government Area, on Friday morning.
The development comes amid tension in the community following the destruction of the ADC office in Ubima by unidentified persons.
Residents reportedly woke up early Friday to discover that part of the party’s office had been set ablaze, causing panic in the neighbourhood. As of the time Amaechi carried out his registration, no arrests had been made in connection with the arson attack.
Addressing supporters who gathered to welcome him into the party, the former governor appealed for calm and urged party members to avoid violence or retaliation.
Amaechi warned that violence could lead to loss of lives and stressed that no act of intimidation would stop political activities in the community.
Despite the incident, he commended security personnel deployed to the area, particularly the Rivers State Commissioner of Police and officials of the Department of State Services, for what he described as their professionalism in handling the situation.
He also called on security agencies to investigate the attack and ensure that those responsible are identified and prosecuted.
Amaechi maintained that attempts to intimidate members of the party through violence would not deter them from participating in political activities in the state.
