A powerful explosion has struck Mehrabad International Airport in Tehran in the early hours of Saturday, sending thick plumes of smoke into the sky and triggering panic across the Iranian capital.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing several loud blasts in western parts of the city, with flames and heavy smoke rising from areas surrounding the airport complex.
Residents said a series of powerful explosions echoed across western Tehran as fires reportedly broke out near the airport facility.
Videos circulating on social media showed flames burning in parts of the airport grounds, while air defence systems were said to have been activated across the capital.
Some footage also appeared to show aircraft on the tarmac engulfed in flames following the explosions. However, the full extent of the damage and whether there were casualties had not been immediately confirmed as of press time.
Israeli officials said the strikes were part of broader military operations targeting strategic locations in Iran.
According to Israeli sources, the attacks were aimed at what they described as high-priority targets within the Iranian capital.
Iranian media also confirmed that a significant explosion occurred in western Tehran, with residents describing a series of deafening blasts across the city.
Mehrabad International Airport is one of Tehran’s busiest aviation hubs, handling both civilian and military flights.
Authorities have yet to release official details on the extent of damage to the airport or possible casualties following the incident.
