The Federal Government of Nigeria has suspended the enforcement of the cashless payment policy recently introduced by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) at airports across the country.

The decision follows widespread disruptions and public outcry triggered by the full implementation of the “Operation Go Cashless” directive at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, where severe traffic congestion left passengers stranded and caused many to miss scheduled flights.

The policy, which mandated compulsory electronic payments at all airport revenue points — including toll gates, car parks, VIP lounges and other services — was designed to modernise airport operations, promote transparency and curb revenue leakages. However, its rollout led to technical glitches, slow transaction processing and long queues of vehicles at airport entry points.

In response to the backlash, the Federal Government directed FAAN to temporarily halt enforcement of the policy to allow for a comprehensive review of its implementation framework.

Officials indicated that the suspension will provide room to address operational challenges, improve infrastructure, and ensure a smoother transition to a fully digital payment system without disrupting passenger movement.

Authorities have assured travellers that further updates will be communicated after consultations with key stakeholders in the aviation sector.
