Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz, has warned that any new Iranian leader appointed by the country’s ruling clerical establishment would be considered a legitimate target if hostile policies toward Israel persist.

In a statement issued Wednesday, Katz said any leader chosen by what he described as Iran’s “terrorist regime” to continue policies aimed at destroying Israel or threatening the United States and other regional actors “will be an unequivocal target for elimination.”

The remarks come amid heightened tensions following the reported death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, and ongoing hostilities between Israel and Iran.

Meanwhile, Iranian state media announced that the country will hold a three-day farewell ceremony for Khamenei beginning at 10 p.m. Wednesday (1830 GMT) at the Imam Khomeini prayer grounds in the capital, Tehran. Authorities said further details regarding the funeral procession will be released once final arrangements are concluded.

The developments signal continued volatility in the region, as questions mount over Iran’s leadership transition and the potential implications for Middle East security.
