The United States Embassy in Nigeria has announced a temporary closure of its Abuja office for routine services amid fears of possible protests in the Federal Capital Territory.
According to information available, the embassy said the closure will remain in effect until Monday, March 9, 2026. The development will affect scheduled visa interviews and American Citizen Services (ACS) appointments.
Applicants who had appointments on March 4 and 5 have been informed that their dates have been rescheduled. Visa applicants were advised to check their email or their AVITS account for updated appointment dates, while those seeking American Citizen Services are required to confirm their new appointments through email.
Applicants who do not receive new dates have been directed to seek assistance through the embassy’s Visa Navigator platform.
The decision follows reports of planned demonstrations in Abuja linked to the ongoing tensions surrounding the conflict involving Iran.
Security presence has reportedly been heightened across the city after protests by the Islamic Movement in Nigeria were recorded in several states, including Niger State, Sokoto State, Kaduna State, Yobe State, Bauchi State, Gombe State and Lagos State.
The group reportedly described the demonstrations as peaceful expressions of support for Iran following reports of the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, in airstrikes allegedly carried out by the United States and Israel.
The embassy has advised the public to continue monitoring its official website and social media platforms for further updates regarding operations and rescheduled appointments.
As of the time of filing this report, no specific dates have been announced for the postponed appointments.
