Heightened security concerns have emerged in Borno State following fresh threats by a cleric linked to the Islamic State West Africa Province, warning of a possible retaliatory attack on Malam Fatori.

According to a report by security analyst, Zagazola Makama, shared on X on Tuesday, the threat was disclosed through military intelligence sources.
The cleric, who reportedly led this year’s Eid-el-Fitr prayers in a location near Sabon Tumbu, is said to have used the gathering to issue a stern warning to Nigerian troops. During his sermon, he allegedly vowed that the group would retaliate for recent military operations carried out in Malam Fatori, threatening that the town could be “reduced to ashes” in a reprisal attack.
The development follows the reported neutralisation of about 75 insurgents during a failed ആക്രമ attack on March 18, 2026.
Security sources have cautioned that such threats should not be taken lightly, noting that insurgent groups often act on publicly issued warnings.
Malam Fatori, a border community in Borno State, has long been regarded as a stronghold of military resistance against insurgent groups. Over the years, it has witnessed several successful operations by Nigerian troops against ISWAP fighters, earning it the nickname “Graveyard of ISWAP.”
Despite the difficult terrain, sustained military presence in the area has made it challenging for insurgents to gain control.
In response to the latest threat, military authorities have reportedly intensified surveillance and reinforced defensive positions in and around the town. Troops of the Nigerian Armed Forces, supported by other security agencies, are said to be on high alert to prevent any attempted attack.
Residents have also been urged to remain vigilant and cooperate with security operatives as efforts continue to forestall any potential incursion.
