The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has resigned from the cabinet of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, citing his intention to pursue the Oyo State governorship in 2027.
In a resignation letter dated April 22, 2026, and addressed to the President through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Adelabu confirmed that his exit will take effect from April 30, 2026.

The former minister explained that his decision was driven by the need to fully concentrate on his long-standing gubernatorial ambition, which he said dates back to 2016. He noted that his previous role as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, as well as his resignation from that position in 2018, were all part of his political trajectory toward leading Oyo State.
Adelabu expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve in his administration, describing it as a privilege to contribute to national development, particularly in advancing reforms within the power sector. He added that his resignation would allow for a smooth transition and aligns with the provisions of the amended Electoral Act 2026.
The development comes weeks after Adelabu publicly apologized to Nigerians over persistent nationwide power outages. Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, he acknowledged the hardship caused by erratic electricity supply, especially amid rising temperatures and increased demand during the dry season.
He assured citizens that measures were being implemented to address the challenges in the power sector and promised noticeable improvements in electricity supply in the coming weeks, describing the outages as temporary despite their widespread impact on homes and businesses.
