United States President Donald Trump’s newly appointed press secretary, Katie Zacharia, has left her position less than a week after taking office, following a series of controversies that reportedly undermined confidence in her role.
Her departure was confirmed by a White House official on Friday, October 16, after reports emerged that she was transitioning out of the position. Zacharia came under intense scrutiny following her first press briefing, which lasted less than 15 minutes, as well as revelations that, although she holds a law degree, she failed to pass the bar examination required to practise law in the United States.
The controversy deepened after Zacharia faced criticism over remarks disparaging China, particularly her claim that the country lacked proper toilets. Her comments drew a sharp response from China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Mao Ning, who advised her to visit the country more often. Zacharia’s abrupt exit comes at a difficult time for President Trump, whose administration faces mounting political pressure ahead of the November 3 congressional midterm elections.
