President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday departed Abuja for London, beginning a high-level state visit aimed at strengthening diplomatic, economic, and cultural ties between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
The President is accompanied by the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, as part of an official delegation expected to engage in a series of strategic meetings and ceremonial events during the visit.
According to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu and his wife will be hosted by King Charles III and Queen Camilla at Windsor Castle from Wednesday, March 18 to Thursday, March 19.
The visit is widely regarded as historic, marking the first state visit by a Nigerian leader to the United Kingdom in 37 years. It also represents a diplomatic first, as President Tinubu becomes the first Nigerian leader to be received by a reigning British monarch at Windsor Castle.
Nigeria and the United Kingdom share longstanding diplomatic relations rooted in history, trade, and shared institutional frameworks. The visit is expected to further consolidate this relationship, particularly at a time when both nations are seeking to deepen cooperation in key sectors.
Top on the agenda are discussions around trade expansion, investment opportunities, and economic partnerships aimed at boosting Nigeria’s growth and attracting foreign direct investment. Both countries are also expected to explore collaboration on immigration policies, security cooperation, and intelligence sharing, especially in light of evolving global security challenges.
Cultural exchange and people-to-people relations are also expected to feature prominently, reflecting the deep social and historical ties between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, including a large Nigerian diaspora community residing in Britain.
The state visit is also seen as an opportunity for Nigeria to reinforce its position on the global stage, while engaging one of its key international partners on issues of mutual interest, including education, innovation, and climate-related initiatives.
President Tinubu is expected to participate in a series of bilateral engagements and high-level meetings during the visit, alongside ceremonial events hosted by the British royal family.
