Health experts have renewed calls for greater support for breastfeeding mothers, stressing the importance of breastfeeding in giving children a healthy start in life.
The call was made during a programme organised by Global Health Digest, titled “Breastfeeding: Giving Babies the Best First Start,” to mark World Breastfeeding Day.
The Director of the Nutrition Department, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Mrs Olufumilola Adegbite, described breastfeeding as a key component of infant nutrition and healthy development.
Adegbite said breast milk provides essential nutrients needed for a baby’s growth and development, while also helping to strengthen the child’s developing immune system.
She stressed that successful breastfeeding goes beyond the efforts of mothers alone, noting that women need access to accurate information, professional guidance and adequate support.
The health expert therefore called on families, healthcare workers, employers and communities to create an environment that makes it easier for mothers to breastfeed their children.
She also emphasised the importance of continued public awareness on the benefits of breastfeeding, particularly among expectant and new mothers.
According to her, providing the right support can help mothers overcome challenges associated with breastfeeding and contribute to better health outcomes for children.
The call comes as health authorities and organisations continue to promote breastfeeding as an important part of efforts to improve child nutrition, survival and long-term development.
