Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has approved the payment of a 13th-month salary bonus for civil servants across the state, in a move aimed at rewarding workers for their dedication and commitment to public service.
The governor made the announcement on Wednesday during the dinner and award night held in Asaba as part of activities marking the 2026 Public Service Week celebration. The event brought together government officials, labour leaders, civil servants, and other stakeholders to celebrate the contributions of the state’s workforce.
The announcement was met with loud applause and excitement from civil servants and guests, many of whom described the decision as a welcome relief amid the country’s current economic challenges.
Speaking at the event, Governor Oborevwori said the bonus was introduced to appreciate the hard work, loyalty, and sacrifices of public servants who have continued to play a vital role in the growth and development of Delta State. He noted that the success of his administration depends largely on the commitment and professionalism of the state’s workforce.
The governor explained that the 13th-month salary bonus is also intended to improve the welfare of workers, boost morale, and encourage greater productivity and efficiency in the public service.
Governor Oborevwori further stated that the initiative makes him the first governor in Delta State to introduce a 13th-month salary bonus for civil servants. According to him, the gesture reflects his administration’s commitment to prioritising workers’ welfare and recognising excellence in public service.
He also observed that the ₦70,000 national minimum wage, approved by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2024, no longer reflects the current economic realities facing Nigerians. He stressed the need for continued efforts to improve workers’ welfare in line with the rising cost of living.
The approval has been widely welcomed by civil servants in the state, with many expressing optimism that the bonus will provide additional financial support and further motivate them to deliver quality service to the people of Delta State.
