The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has dismissed reports of a fire outbreak that occurred on Sunday at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, clarifying that no casualties were recorded.
FAAN explained that preliminary findings indicate the smoke observed within the terminal was caused by the discharge of the building’s FM-200 fire suppression system, and not an actual fire outbreak.
In a statement posted on its official X account, the authority confirmed that its Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting Service (ARFFS) responded immediately to the incident and swiftly moved to assess and contain the situation.
According to FAAN, firefighting and emergency personnel were deployed to the affected area as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of passengers, airport staff, and other users of the facility, while also preventing any potential escalation.
The authority assured the public that there was no loss of life and reiterated that all necessary safety protocol were activated promptly.
FAAN further appealed for calm, assuring travellers that efforts were ongoing to minimise any disruption to airport operations while investigations and assessments continue. It added that further updates would be provided as more information becomes available.
Meanwhile, normal activities have resumed at the terminal, with passengers being processed for check-in and flight operations running according to schedule.
