Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has blamed Nigerians for allowing politicians to continue looting public funds without resistance.

The former Rivers State governor said politicians would continue to impoverish citizens if they are not held accountable for corrupt practices, adding that Nigerians must rise and demand better governance.

According to Aeris News report, Amaechi made the statement during an interview on Arise Television’s prime-time programme.

“Politicians will not stop stealing if Nigerians don’t stone us,” he said.

Amaechi recalled making a similar statement during an event organised by Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka, while serving as governor of Rivers State.

He noted that although there are still good politicians who have made positive impacts, governance in Nigeria is taking a negative direction, which he described as painful.

Amaechi also highlighted his experience as former governor of Rivers State, former Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, former Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, and former Minister of Transportation.

According to him, these leadership positions have adequately prepared him for national leadership.
