News Release:
The Presidency has initiated steps to address rising tensions surrounding the conduct of National Assembly primaries within the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
A source at the Presidential Villa disclosed that the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, alongside the Special Adviser on Political and Other Matters, Ibrahim Masari, held a high-level meeting with the leadership of the National Assembly.
Attendees at the meeting included Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, and Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu.
Following the engagement, the Presidential Supervision Team on National Assembly Primaries also met with members of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) as part of efforts to ensure coordination and stability in the party’s internal processes.
According to the source, the meetings were prompted by multiple petitions received by President Bola Tinubu, alleging attempts by some governors to influence or control the outcome of National Assembly primaries in APC-controlled states.
“The President has received numerous petitions regarding alleged interference by governors in the primaries, creating significant tension within the party,” the source said.
To address the situation, the Presidential Supervision Team has been mandated to promote peace, monitor the primary process, and manage conflicts before, during, and after the primaries.
The source further indicated that where consensus arrangements fail, the President may direct the party to conduct credible and transparent primaries among aspirants.

“The team is working closely with the National Working Committee of the APC to resolve emerging challenges. While more meetings are expected, final decisions rest with the President,” the source added.
The intervention underscores the Presidency’s effort to maintain internal cohesion within the APC and ensure a credible process as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.
