The South-West Coordinator of the Obi-Kwankwaso Movement, Adefolaseye Adebayo, has claimed that about 10 million Nigerians registered with the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) within 24 hours following the defection of former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, to the party.
Adebayo made the assertion during an interview on ARISE Television on Monday while responding to criticisms suggesting that Obi’s chances of becoming Nigeria’s President may have diminished after leaving the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Obi, alongside former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, formally exited the ADC on Sunday to join the NDC, a move that has since triggered widespread political reactions and intensified debates ahead of the 2027 general elections.
While some political analysts and critics argue that Obi’s decision to switch parties could weaken his electoral prospects, Adebayo dismissed such concerns, insisting that the former governor remains a formidable political force with significant grassroots support nationwide.
According to her, Obi’s political strength transcends party affiliation and is rooted in his personal credibility, track record, and perceived competence in governance.
She stressed that Obi commands a loyal and expansive support base cutting across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, making it inaccurate to suggest that his chances—or those of the South-East geopolitical region—have been adversely affected by the defection.
“Mr Peter Obi has a lot of followership across Nigeria. You can’t say that Obi’s chances or the chance of the South East have drastically reduced,” she said, adding that the reported surge in NDC registrations shortly after his move underscores his enduring popularity.
The defection of Obi and Kwankwaso has further energized the political space, with supporters viewing their alliance as a potential third-force coalition capable of reshaping Nigeria’s political landscape. Many believe the partnership could consolidate votes among Nigerians seeking alternatives to the dominant parties.
Adebayo maintained that Obi’s supporters are largely driven by his vision and leadership style rather than party structures, noting that they are likely to remain committed regardless of the platform he represents.
She added that the growing interest in the NDC following Obi’s defection reflects continued public engagement with his political movement and signals a broader appetite for change among the electorate as the 2027 elections draw closer.
Excellent update, God bless you
