The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has ordered the immediate dismissal and arrest of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu over his alleged involvement in the extrajudicial killing of a civilian in Delta State.
The directive, issued from Abuja on Thursday, follows the circulation of a viral video linked to the incident, which reportedly occurred on April 26, 2026, in the Effurun area of the state.
The victim, identified as Oghenmene, was said to have been killed after being apprehended in connection with a parcel he had gone to collect on behalf of a friend at a logistics outlet in Effurun, Uvwie.
According to eyewitness accounts, the deceased had visited a dispatch outlet in the Sunny Eru axis to pick up a waybill package. A dispute reportedly arose over additional charges before he was asked to open the parcel. Upon inspection, the package allegedly contained a Beretta pistol concealed in baby clothing alongside ammunition.
Sources say civilians at the scene restrained Oghenmene and contacted officers of the Nigeria Police Force. He was subsequently handed over to police operatives attached to the Effurun Division.
However, the situation escalated, leading to the alleged unlawful killing of the suspect in a broad daylight by ASP Nuhu and other officers
Reacting to the development, the IGP condemned the act, describing it as a gross violation of professional standards and the rule of law.
“No uniform is a license to take life unlawfully without due process. Every suspect is entitled to a fair hearing,” the police chief stated.
He further directed that all officers involved be taken into custody pending a full investigation, assuring the public that justice would be served.
The incident has sparked public outrage and renewed concerns over cases of police brutality and extrajudicial actions in the country more especially delta state . Rights groups have called for transparency and accountability as investigations continue.
The police authorities say further updates will be provided as the case progresses.
