A murder trial has begun in Massachusetts, United States, where 35-year-old Lindsay Clancy is accused of killing her three young children in January 2023.
Clancy admits to strangling her children—Cora, 5; Dawson, 3; and eight-month-old Callan—before attempting to take her own life. She survived after jumping from a second-storey window but was left paralysed.
During opening statements, the defence argued that Clancy was suffering from severe postpartum psychosis and other mental health complications following the birth of her third child. Her lawyer described her as a loving mother who had sought treatment from several healthcare providers but failed to recover despite multiple medications.
Prosecutors acknowledged that Clancy had mental health challenges but argued that the killings were deliberate and carefully planned.
The court also heard testimony from Clancy’s former husband, Patrick Clancy, who said she had recently been discharged from a psychiatric hospital and showed no signs of harming herself or the children before he left home to pick up dinner.
The trial is expected to last between six and eight weeks. If convicted of first-degree murder, Clancy faces a mandatory sentence of life imprisonment.
