The Federal Government on Monday held a solemn remembrance ceremony in Abuja to commemorate the first anniversary of the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, bringing together family members, political leaders, traditional rulers, religious figures and associates to honour his life and service to the nation.
The event, organised to mark one year since the former President’s death, attracted dignitaries from across Nigeria, who paid glowing tributes to Buhari’s contributions to governance, national security and public service during his time in office.
Among those in attendance were former First Lady Aisha Buhari and former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd.), alongside serving and former state governors, members of the National Assembly, senior government officials, diplomats, traditional rulers, clerics and political associates.
Speakers at the ceremony reflected on Buhari’s decades of service to Nigeria, from his military career to his tenure as military Head of State and later as a democratically elected President. They described him as a leader who remained committed to national unity, discipline and the fight against corruption throughout his years in public office.
Prayers were offered for the peaceful repose of the late former President, while religious leaders urged Nigerians to embrace the values of integrity, patriotism and selfless service, which they said Buhari consistently advocated during his lifetime.
The remembrance also provided an opportunity for family members, friends and political allies to share personal reflections on his life, leadership and legacy, highlighting his impact on Nigeria’s political history.
The gathering underscored the enduring respect Buhari continues to command across political and regional divides, as tributes poured in from various stakeholders acknowledging his contributions to the country’s democratic development.
