Portugal football legend Luis Figo has called on FIFA President Gianni Infantino to resign amid growing controversy over a proposal to sell stakes in the FIFA World Cup to private equity investors.

According to reports, the proposal has drawn criticism from several football stakeholders, with some national federations reportedly withdrawing their support, while UEFA and other football bodies are said to have raised concerns about Infantino’s expected bid for another term.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Figo claimed Infantino had lost the confidence of many within the football community and urged him to step down in the interest of the sport.

FIFA has not publicly responded to Figo’s comments or the allegations surrounding the proposal.
