Serena Williams has withdrawn from her planned Wimbledon doubles comeback alongside her older sister, Venus Williams, after suffering a knee injury.
The American sisters, six-time Wimbledon doubles champions, were set to play together in a Grand Slam for the first time since 2022. However, the 44-year-old Serena was forced to pull out after injuring her knee during her singles defeat to Australia’s Maya Joint on Tuesday.
In a post on Instagram, Serena said she was “heartbroken” to withdraw, adding that playing alongside Venus again meant the world to her. She explained that despite doing everything possible to recover, her knee was not ready for competition.
Wimbledon organisers had earlier hoped Serena would be fit after the match was included in Saturday’s order of play, but the injury ended the much-anticipated reunion.
