A severe heatwave has swept across Western Europe, triggering rare red alerts and pushing temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius in several countries.
In France, record-breaking temperatures forced the closure of the Eiffel Tower, the postponement of school examinations, and the shutdown of hundreds of schools. Authorities have also reported several drowning deaths as people sought relief from the extreme heat.
In the United Kingdom, a rare Red Extreme Heat Warning was issued as temperatures climbed above 36 degrees Celsius. The heat disrupted major transport services, including rail networks, and led to the closure of many schools.
Spain recorded some of its hottest June temperatures on record, reaching 44 degrees Celsius in some areas, while Italy placed 16 cities, including Rome and Milan, under red heatwave alerts.
Although temperatures are beginning to ease in some regions, authorities remain on high alert as the extreme weather continues to pose risks to public health and infrastructure.
