Minister of Works, David Umahi, has called for a comprehensive investigation into the death of Mary Habila, a nurse and physiotherapist who was found dead at his guest house in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
Speaking on the incident, Umahi disclosed that Habila had been on a phone call with her boyfriend shortly before she died. According to the minister, she reportedly complained of persistent nosebleeding during the conversation and pleaded with her boyfriend not to end the call. However, the connection was unexpectedly lost, and when the boyfriend attempted to call back about three minutes later, there was no response.
The minister explained that the deceased was an employee of the David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital and had been receiving treatment for an existing medical condition. He revealed that he had personally been supporting her medical care, including sponsoring her treatment at a hospital in Turkey, in an effort to improve her health.
Umahi stressed the need for a transparent and impartial investigation, urging security agencies to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding Habila’s death. He specifically called on the police to analyse the phone records between the deceased and her boyfriend, saying the information could help investigators establish a clearer timeline of events leading up to her death.
He also directed that a detailed autopsy be carried out to determine the exact cause of death and eliminate any uncertainty surrounding the incident.
The minister assured the public that he is committed to ensuring that the truth is uncovered, while the Nigeria Police continue investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragic death.
