The football community is mourning the death of Dutch referee Rob Dieperink, who has passed away at the age of 38.
The Royal Netherlands Football Association (KNVB) confirmed his death in a statement, expressing deep sadness over the loss of one of its experienced match officials. While announcing his passing, the association did not disclose the cause of death.
Dieperink had built a respected career in Dutch football, serving as an Eredivisie referee since 2017. Over the years, he officiated numerous top-flight matches and earned recognition for his consistency and professionalism. His experience also saw him appointed as a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) during the UEFA Euro 2024 tournament, where he was part of the team responsible for reviewing key decisions during matches.
Earlier this year, Dieperink was removed from duties connected with the 2026 FIFA World Cup following an investigation by authorities in the United Kingdom. The development came after he was arrested by officers of the Metropolitan Police in London in April over an allegation of sexual assault involving a teenager.
However, after conducting investigations, the Metropolitan Police discontinued the case, stating that there was insufficient evidence to support further legal action. Authorities confirmed that no formal charges were filed against Dieperink, and the investigation was subsequently closed.
In its tribute, the KNVB described Dieperink as a kind, dedicated and highly valued colleague whose contribution to Dutch football would not be forgotten. The association said his sudden death had come as a profound shock to members of the football community, extending its condolences to his family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time.
The news of his passing has also prompted tributes from fellow referees, football officials and supporters, many of whom have remembered him for his commitment to the game and his years of service at both the domestic and international levels.
