The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, has resigned from office amid moves by some lawmakers to impeach him.
Agbebaku’s resignation was confirmed on Monday, August 17, by his media aide, Ivy Ibujele, who said further details on the circumstances surrounding his exit would be made public later.
Following his resignation, a three-term lawmaker representing Akoko-Edo Constituency I, Yakini Idayae, emerged as the new Speaker.
Addressing journalists after Monday’s plenary, Idayae accused the former Speaker of poor leadership and alleged corruption, saying his leadership had hindered the work of the Assembly.
He said the change in leadership was necessary to support Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration.
Recall that Agbebaku had previously suspended three lawmakers over an alleged plot to remove him and other principal officers of the Assembly.
The Edo Assembly had also suspended its first sitting of 2026 after bullets and gunshot holes were discovered on the roof of the complex. The police and Department of State Services, DSS, were subsequently invited to investigate the incident.
