Iran has rejected U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan to declare the strategic Strait of Hormuz a U.S. territory, warning that the waterway cannot be taken through military force or political declarations.
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, said the strait “has been Iranian, is Iranian, and will remain Iranian,” in response to Trump’s remarks.
Trump had said he would soon declare the Strait of Hormuz a U.S. territory after what he described as the defeat of Iran.
The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and Oman, connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and remains a major route for global energy shipments.
Iran’s position has further heightened tensions between Tehran and Washington, with the status and reopening of the waterway emerging as a key issue in the ongoing confrontation.
