Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has commended the monarchs of Warri for promoting peace, unity and peaceful coexistence among the people of the area.

The governor spoke through the Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Nyerhovwo Tonukari, at the closing ceremony of the inaugural Warri Unity Games held at the Federal Government College, Warri.

Tonukari said the governor recognises sports as a powerful tool for strengthening relationships and promoting lasting peace.

He urged the athletes and spectators to uphold discipline, fair play and mutual respect, assuring that the state government would continue to support grassroots initiatives that promote youth development, cultural heritage and peaceful coexistence.

The Ovie of Agbarha-Warri Kingdom, His Royal Majesty King Kingsley Emakpo Orereh, Ataneru Igbi II, also commended the Olu of Warri for initiating the games, describing them as an important step towards reconciliation and unity.

He urged residents to extend the spirit of peace beyond the sporting arena and avoid inflammatory statements, particularly on social media.

Also speaking, the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, said the games were designed to highlight the common bonds shared by the people of Warri.

He announced that the Unity Games would become a regular feature of his coronation anniversary activities, with the initiative aimed at promoting unity and preventing a repeat of past conflicts.

The monarch expressed optimism that Warri could reclaim its place as a leading cultural and tourism destination, stressing that the people must work together to build a more peaceful and prosperous future.
