The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the forfeiture of several properties linked to former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, who is currently serving a 75-year prison sentence following his conviction in connection with a multi-billion naira fraud case.
In a ruling delivered by Justice James Omotosho, the court granted the final forfeiture of Walijam Apartments, located in Wuse 2, Abuja, after finding that the property was allegedly acquired with proceeds of unlawful activities.
The court also approved an interim forfeiture order covering Bloom Luxury Suites Nigeria Limited in Kaduna, as well as three additional properties situated in Wuse 2, Abuja. The interim order allows the assets to remain under government control pending the resolution of any ownership claims that may be brought before the court.
According to court proceedings, the properties are believed to have been acquired with funds allegedly diverted from the Mambilla and Zungeru Hydroelectric Power Projects—two major power infrastructure projects intended to improve electricity generation across the country.
Justice Omotosho directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to publish the interim forfeiture order in a national newspaper. The publication is intended to notify any individuals or organisations claiming an interest in the affected properties, giving them the opportunity to appear before the court and challenge the forfeiture within the period prescribed by law.
The ruling marks another development in the Federal Government’s efforts to recover assets believed to have been acquired through the proceeds of corruption and financial crimes. It also underscores the EFCC’s continued campaign to trace, seize and recover assets linked to public officials convicted of fraud and other economic offences.
Legal observers say the final status of the properties covered by the interim forfeiture order will depend on whether any interested parties come forward with evidence to establish legitimate ownership before the court reaches a final determination.
