Nigerian comedian and actor Ayo Makun, popularly known as AY, has revealed why he stopped attending church services physically for a period.
The entertainer said negative online stories and public scrutiny over his personal life made church attendance emotionally difficult, as he wanted to avoid becoming the subject of whispers and unwanted attention during worship.
AY explained that he temporarily switched to online services to focus on his faith without the pressure of public exposure.
He further disclosed that after joining a new church, he was warmly welcomed and invited to participate in a church programme. However, the invitation was later withdrawn following internal concerns about his public image.
While saying he respects the church’s decision, AY questioned whether public opinion had become more influential than grace, asking, “Who is the church really for?” He reaffirmed his faith in Jesus Christ, adding that the church should be a place of restoration, not a gathering reserved for perfect people.
