Fresh fears of flooding have emerged after the Federal Ministry of Environment warned that 944 communities across 21 states face a high risk of flooding between August 2 and August 15, 2026.
The ministry attributed the threat to persistent rainfall, rising river levels, saturated soil, rapid surface runoff, and overwhelmed drainage systems. It urged residents in vulnerable communities to take precautionary measures and remain alert.
States listed as being at high risk include Delta, Rivers, Bayelsa, Lagos, Benue, Kogi, Niger, Edo, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo, Ekiti, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, and Kwara.
The warning comes as heavy rainfall over the weekend caused flooding in parts of Delta State, leaving several homes, roads, and communities submerged, while some residents were stranded.
Residents of Ughelli, Agbarho, and parts of Uvwie are appealing to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to urgently improve drainage channels, clear blocked gutters and canals, and implement flood-control measures similar to those recently carried out in Sapele to reduce the impact of flooding during the rainy season.
